David W. Shelor
David W. Shelor was one of the most outstanding students at Andrew Lewis High School when he graduated in 1968.  His list of activities, accomplishments, and honors included: President of the Student Council (SCA) 1967-1968; Vice President, Interact Club (Rotary); President, Homeroom grades 8-11; King of Homecoming Court 1968; member of the Monogram Club, Latin Club, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes; and voted “Best Leader” by the Senior Mirror.  A superb athlete, he was captain of the football team 1968-66 and in his senior year made 1st team All City-County, 1st team All Western District and 2nd team All State.  He was also a member of the track and basketball teams and received a Certificate of Commendation from the Exchange Club.

In 1968, David entered Hampden Sydney College as a Baker Scholar and earned a B.A. degree in 1972.  He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity and co-captain of the football team in 1971.  That team had the distinction of being the only undefeated football team in HSC history.  David was named to 1st team All Mason-Dixon Conference, received honorable mention on the All Small College Team, and was listed as one of the Outstanding College Athletes of America.  In 1970 and 1971, Hampden Sydney was a Division Two Championship Finalist in the Knute Rockne Bowl and a recipient of the NCAA Outstanding Achievement Award.

After College, David went to work for the Roanoke Restaurant Service in his hometown of Salem, Virginia, and one year later was promoted to the position of Sales Manager.  In 1979 he was named Executive Vice President of the then successor U.S. Food Service.  In 1991, he became President of the company and held that position until his retirement in the year 2000.  Already the largest food service company in Virginia, under David’s leadership market share was substantially increased.  This resulted in a major expansion being added to the Salem Distribution center.  During his career with the company David served on the Chairman’s Roundtable of U.S. Food Service from 1993-1997 and the President’s Council of U.S. Food Service from 1993-1997.  In both 1996 and 1997, David’s distribution facility in Salem was the top operating company in the U.S. Food Service organization.

Other career highlights for David included serving on the board of the Credit Marketing and Management Association, on the board of the National Institutional Food Distribution Association, and as Chairman of the Hampden Sydney College Parents Council.  He has been an assistant scoutmaster and past member of the Salem Rotary Club, the Penguin Club, United Way Presidents Club, Hampden Sydney Founder, Roanoke College Associate, and past Chairman of the Roanoke County Educational Foundation - Bayse Wilson Circle.

David and his wife, Connie, are members of the First United Methodist Church in Salem and they have two children, Stacey Shelor Owen and Andrew.  Stacey is a graduate of Radford university and Andrew a graduate of Hampden Sydney College.

In recognition of his outstanding career achievements, David W. Shelor was inducted, in the year 2000, into the Salem Alumni Hall of Fame established by the Salem Educational Foundation and Alumni Association.
